It binds a 4Fe-4S cluster and can transfer this cluster to apoproteins, thereby intervening in the maturation of Fe/S proteins. This protein could also act as a scaffold/chaperone for damaged Fe/S proteins. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Fe/S biogenesis protein NfuA is required for &lt;taxon tax_id="562"&gt;Escherichia coli&lt;/taxon&gt; to sustain oxidative stress and iron starvation, it is also necessary for the use of extracellular DNA as the sole source of carbon and energy. &lt;/p&gt;</ns1:prib124u1i>
