Developed by Kenji Nishide and Tatsuya Hirano, Chromosome Dynamics Laboratory, RIKEN. BA1 ES cells (C57BL/6 x 129/SvEv) were targeted by using standard conditional knockout methods by inGenious Targeting Laboratory (NY, USA). The mice were mated with CAG-FLPe transgenic mice to delete the Neo selection cassettes, and subsequently backcrossed to C57BL/6J over eight generations.

Smc2 gene floxed mice. Condensins I and II are evolutionarily conserved protein complexes and thought to be central to chromosome assembly and segregation among eukaryotes. In Smc2 floxed mice, exons 10-12 of the Smc2 gene (encoding a shared subunit of both condensins) are flanked by loxP sites. Tissue-specific deletion of Smc2 can be generated by crossing with various Cre-expressing mice to study the functions of both condensins. Homozygous floxed mice are viable and fertile.
