<p>The glycophorin-binding protein contains a tandem repeat. The repeated sequence determines the binding domain for an erythrocyte receptor binding protein of <taxon tax_id="5833">Plasmodium falciparum</taxon>, the malarial parasite [<cite idref="PUB00015009"/>]. Erythrocyte invasion by the malarial merozoite is a receptor-mediated process, an obligatory step in the development of the parasite. The P. falciparum protein binds to the erythrocyte receptor glycophorin.</p>
