RNA polymerases catalyse the DNA dependent polymerisation of RNA. Prokaryotes contain a single RNA polymerase compared to three in eukaryotes (not including mitochondrial and chloroplast polymerases). Domain 4, is also known as the external 2 domain [<cite idref="PUB00008731"/>].
